The Importance of Independent, Unbiased Data

The US government reveals that there have been thousands of children that have been separated from their families at the US/Mexico border. This is yet another instance of fact manipulation that misleads the public, and is ruining the credibility and integrity of democracy.

The president has said that Russia did not interfere with the 2016 election, when in fact they had. He also said that human activity was not contributing to climate change, when scientists and research have factual evidence that it does. It is not uncommon for presidents or politicians to present data in a way that benefits them and their political goal. The current administration has taken this too far, and have given the public egregiously distorted facts in order to justify flawed laws and policies. Their actions have had an immense impact on public health, the environment, national security, and the economy. Conflicts over facts have created a road block for both parties when it comes to reaching agreements. In the long-term, these disputes will negatively impact American’s faith in their government.

A recent study revealed that only a third of Americans trusted that their government would do what is right. Evidently, good and factual information is important to the public.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency releases reports and assessments on a number of topics, including health, the environment, and the economy. It is important for these reports to be available to the public and provide facts-based data that can be used to facilitate policy-making within the different levels of government. While the agency’s acting administrator informed senators that he would not be influenced by political ideology, facts were later revealed that contradicted his statement. He claimed to only rely on information produced by his staff, however, senators were able to bring up cases whereby that research did not support policy decisions. In addition, when asked about the potential for political interference to halt the investigation of ethylene oxide, which is a chemical that poses a health risk to the public, he did not state that he would be committed to investigating the matter further.
The question remains: how will we set standards that ensure the integrity of government information that is expected? It’s a question that remains unanswered. Right now, the government is addressing issues relating to public health, immigration, and the environment, all of which require factual information to determine the best course of action.

The Public’s Understanding of Data

Many people don’t know that data can be biassed or unbiased. Not knowing the difference between the two can have you believing false reports and information. It’s important to do your research and make sure the things that are being presented to you are factual.
